In regard to story progression it may have been pointless. However, Luo Jun insulted not only their school but also Lin Feng, so Li Jianfei stepped forward to defend their honour and to put him in his place. So that alone made that fight worthwhile as honour and reputation mean a lot to some.

I got to respect an honest guy like Li Jianfei. He lost to mc, fair and square and yet he doesn't take every chance he gets screen-time to act like an ass and plot to kill mc. He is obviously not happy about it as he lost his #1 disciple position to mc, it is frustrating but he is mature enough to quietly use that loss as motivation to get stronger.
